Brilliantly done in both the delightful story and the artful illustrations, this book imparts an important lesson regarding a specific virtue, sharing. The vocabulary at first surprised me for a children's book, e.g., the words "plethora" and "nemesis." Then I found the glossary in the back...an additional critical lesson, building the child's vocabulary (and perhaps the parent's, as well)! In today's world of mindless entertainment to keep children "occupied," it's time to think of developing their minds and their values. This book is a refreshing turn for children, combining children's entertainment and education! Great gift for young child. May even instill an early interest in birding. Your actions have consequences that you may not easily see.
This little story reflects the importance of empathy and the need to take care of each other. Further, the author has included interesting nature facts about her bird characters and taken the time to add vocabulary information for her young readers. Delightful illustrations round out this sweet book.
In a time of societal emphasis on "me" it is nice to find quality children's literature that not only teaches, but instils in the reader a sense of moral. Ann Moore has done it! Her book is a beautifully illustrated, phenomenal example of what children's literature should be. I will use this book in my classroom and I can't wait to read it with my granddaughter. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series!!
